“This course provides practical and helpful tools to build a positive relationship with your pre-teen. Each week Val taught simple strategies on how to communicate with my child. It is clear from the beginning that she is an expert in this area. I really enjoyed that we got to practice our new skills and report back at the following session. My relationship with my child has improved ten-fold since attending this course. I would highly recommend this course for every parent with pre-teens.”

Do you wonder how to prepare your child to successfully navigate the teenage years? Do you wonder how to prepare yourself?! This is information that every parent or carer of preteens will need, and the time to invest is before you enter the woods.

Besides being a Parenting Author and accredited Coach, I'm a 'been-there-and-done-that' parent! Let me tell you a little about my own experience of parenting a pre-teen. My first career was in teaching, and I thought I had a handle on how to deal with kids. But when my second son, who had been an easy-going child, grew into teenage-hood I found myself floundering. Within a few months it felt like my child had grown into someone I didn’t know (and sometimes didn’t like – and I imagine he probably felt the same about me!) Everything I thought I knew about parenting wasn’t working.

There was an angst between us – almost every interaction seemed prickly. If only I could change him back into the sweet cooperative child he used to be! But I knew that wasn’t possible. Our relationship sank from sometimes scratchy to red zone on the hostility richter scale; he seemed to view me as the ‘opponent’ – rather than someone whom he could count on when he needed me the most. But here’s the good news! In his later teens, whilst still wishing I could fix him, I had a huge ‘aha!’. I’ll share more about this on the course - but within a few months, by changing my perspective, we found our way back to the green zone. We could now meaningfully connect and communicate in this new land of adolescence.

I’m not saying it was all plain sailing, but now I had figured out a map and discovered there was a compass to guide me, especially in times when the terrain became rocky. My son is in his 40’s now and we have a great relationship. And what I know is that our journey through his teen years could have been so much simpler and smoother – and easier for both of us - if I had known then what I know now. I’d love to share with you this simple step-by-step parenting map that can guide you to successfully navigate the fast-approaching teenage years. This phase can be a fabulous time of discovery for parent and child, when we’ve figured out what’s needed for the journey. I’d love for you to join me so I can share what I have learnt, and help you find a more harmonious way through the teenage years, that’s kinder on all the family.
